Long Time, No See

It seems that this poor blog has suffered the fate of so many before it: abandonment. I had the best intentions! I even checked out a book on juggling. Alas, life intervened. But now, seeing as it's a new year (and I now have a camera to capture my adventures), I renew my commitment to hobbies. So yeah. Check in soon.

After watching The Brothers Bloom recently, I developed a girl crush on Rachel Weisz's character Penelope (and further augmented my full-blown crush on one Mr. Adrien Brody and his glorious nose). Penelope, an eccentric collector of hobbies, is a girl after my own heart. I think I should add this trick to my list of things to learn.

TTFN!

The Strange World of Hobbies

Before I begin this immense endeavor, I figured I was obliged to do some research. Hobbies, pleasurable pursuits, diversions, leisure activities...whatever you call them, they've always been around. The ancient Greeks wrestled each other naked. The Mayans played a dangerous Ball Game where losers were sentenced to death. Medieval Europeans enjoyed falconry, the hunt, and unhorsing each other with heavy sticks at a full gallop. And for women, of course, there was needlepoint. It wasn't until fairly recently, however, that the majority of people had enough spare time to partake of pastimes.

While there are your typical hobbies, like birding and basket weaving and bridge, there are also some more eccentric ones out there, like geocaching (hiding and finding treasures at particular latitudes and longitudes), gravestone rubbing and storm chasing.

Being a linguistic nerd, it interested me to learn that the word hobby was coined in the 17th century and came from the hobby horse toy, a fun little amusement that literally didn't go anywhere.

Anyway, it's Labor Day weekend and that's all the studying I'm willing to do for now. I'm also a bit tuckered out from working on my first hobby this afternoon. Who knew that something so easy-looking was so much work? Look out for my first activity post next week...

Hello World

My name is Sarah Marie and I lead a boring life. My interests include such flavorless activities as reading, writing, taking naps, channel surfing and perusing the interwebs. But recently I have committed to finding "my cup of tea," something satisfying to fill my spare time, something I absolutely love . I've tried out stuff like softball, fencing, belly dancing, saxophone, choir and Harry Potter club, but nothing's fit quite right. Ergo I've started this blog to record my search for the ultimate hobby. Right now I have a list of over 80 ideas, including historical reenactment, cigar smoking, astronomy, juggling, DJing, fashion sketching, bird-watching and boomerang throwing, and I'll try one every other week or so, workload permitting (classes and work do take precedence, unfortunately). Leave me any ideas, advice, etc. and I'll see you all soon!
